Caps Announce 2011-2012 Regular Season Schedule

Posted by Cheryl Nichols | Thursday, June 23, 2011 | , , | 0 comments »

The Washington Capitals announced their 2011-12 regular season schedule today.  Pre-season schedule was announced earlier in the week.

The Washington Capitals’ 82-game regular-season schedule for 2011-12 begins on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Verizon Center versus the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m., with the first road game of the campaign set for Oct. 13 against the Pittsburgh Penguins at CONSOL Energy Center.

The 2011-12 NHL schedule format, like the last three seasons, has the Capitals facing the other teams in the Southeast Division six times each and the remaining Eastern Conference opponents four times each. Washington plays each team in the Western Conference at least once, with two games each against Detroit, Nashville and San Jose. Nine Western Conference teams will visit Verizon Center.

The Capitals will host the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins at Verizon Center on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5 at 12:30 p.m. It will mark the third year in a row that the Capitals will play on Super Bowl Sunday.

Washington has six homestands of at least three games on the schedule, the longest being a five-game stretch at Verizon Center from Feb. 28 - Mar. 8. The Capitals have two stretches of at least three straight road games and a season-high five-game road trip from Mar. 13-22. In addition, the Capitals will have 12 sets of back-to-back games.

Nearly half of the Capitals’ 41 home games at Verizon Center fall on weekends, which includes seven games on Friday, six on Saturday and five on Sunday. The schedule features holiday home games on Columbus Day (Oct. 10 vs. Tampa Bay), the day before and the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 23 vs. Winnipeg; Nov. 25 vs. New York Rangers), Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5 vs. Boston) and the day before Valentine’s Day (Feb. 13 vs. San Jose).

All but eight of Washington’s home games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m., with five Sunday afternoon games scheduled.

Television broadcast plans will be released at a later date. All Capitals games can be heard on Caps Radio 1500 and 820 AM as well as WashingtonCaps.com.

Schedule Set for Second Round

Posted by Dave Nichols | Thursday, April 28, 2011 | , , , , | 0 comments »

The Washington Capitals will face Southeast Division rival Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, starting Friday night at 7:00 pm from Verizon Center.  There is a noticeable quirk in the schedule: back-to-back games in Tampa next Tuesday and Wednesday, due to the University of South Florida graduation ceremonies to be held at the St. Pete Times Forum on Thursday.

Here's the full schedule:

Game One: Friday, April 29, 7:00 pm at Verizon Center (Versus, TSN)
Game Two: Sunday, May 1, 7:00 pm at Verizon Center (Versus, CBC)
Game Three: Tuesday, May 3, time TBD at St. Pete Times Forum (Comcast SportsNet, Versus, TSN)
Game Four: Wednesday, May 4, 7:00 pm at St. Pete Times Forum (Comcast SportsNet, TSN)
*Game Five: Saturday, May 7, 12:30 pm at Verizon Center (NBC, TSN)
*Game Six: Monday, May 9, time TBD at St. Pete Times Forum (Comcast SportsNet, Versus, TSN)
*Game Seven: Wednesday, May 11, time TBD at Verizon Center (Comcast SportsNet, Versus, TSN)

*If necessary.

The NHL announced the schedule for the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs Sunday night.  As expected, the Washington Capitals will face the New York Rangers on Wednesday, Apr. 13 at 7:30 pm for Game One, to be broadcast on Versus.

The Caps and Rangers then play Game Two Friday, Apr. 15 at 7:30 pm, again on Versus.  Both Game One and Game Two will be in Washington at the Verizon Center.

The series shifts to New York for Games Three and Four, Sunday Apr., 17 at 3:00 pm (on NBC) and Wednesday, Apr. 20 at 7:00 pm.

Game Five, if necessary, will be back at Verizon Center at 3:00 pm Saturday, Apr. 23 at 3:00 pm on NBC.

Game Six is scheduled for Monday, Apr. 25 and Game Seven Wednesday, Apr. 27, times to be determined.

The Washington Capitals face the New York Rangers this evening, going for win No. 12 in a row.

While that is exiting enough to get most Caps fans into a frenzy, this weekend's massive snowstorm that's bearing down on the mid-Atlantic region calls into peril the Friday night game with Atlanta and especially Sunday's nationally televised matchup with the dastardly Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

First, from the National Weather Service:
WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM FRIDAY TO 10 PM EST SATURDAY...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STERLING VIRGINIA HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW WITH NEAR-BLIZZARD CONDITIONS... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM FRIDAY TO 10 PM EST SATURDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* PRECIPITATION TYPE... HEAVY SNOW.

* ACCUMULATIONS... STORM TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 16 TO 24 INCHES.

* TIMING... SNOW WILL BEGIN MID-MORNING FRIDAY... AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING. CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE RAPIDLY FRIDAY AFTERNOON... WITH HEAVIEST SNOWFALL OCCURRING BETWEEN SUNSET FRIDAY TO SUNRISE SATURDAY.
It sounds like the Thrashers (with or without Ilya Kovalchuk) will be able to get IN to D.C., but probably won't make it OUT Saturday.  Atlanta is scheduled to play in Florida against the Panthers at 7:00 pm Saturday night.  Good luck with that, but it's not the Caps' problem.

What is the Caps problem, is Sunday's game.  The snow will be over by then, but the real problem is Pittsburgh's schedule, and the game time on Sunday.

The Pens play in Montreal at 2:00 pm Saturday, and are scheduled to come to DC that evening.  For the same reason that Atlanta probably won't make it out, the Pens could very well not make it in Saturday night.

What's worse, because of the nationally televised noon game (to avoid going against the Super Bowl), there's no way they'd fly in Sunday morning to play at noon.  They'd have to move the game to later Sunday (which they would want to avoid if at all possible), or perhaps Monday night.

The Caps and Pens are both off until Wednesday, and Verizon Center is dark Monday night, with the Wizards on the road Tuesday in Charlotte (maybe).

There are two other complications:  arena workers, and transportation.

If there's as much snow as predicted, it'll be pure hell getting around town.  We were on the road last Saturday and the beltway hadn't even been plowed yet, and we were only talking a few inches.  Most of the jurisdictions in the area have already spent their season's budgets on snow removal.

Getting stadium workers, security and game officials into (and out of) the arena will be messy at best and hazardous at worst.

Also consider, the Hoyas and Wizards have both have games Saturday between the two hockey games.  That's four games in tow days, with different people needed to work the different events.  It'll be nuts!

And if you plan to take Metro to come to any of the games, be warned:  they've already announced that once eight inches accumulate, the outdoor stations will be closed.

So stay tuned Caps fans.  Caps News Network will have any schedule updates as they become available over the weekend.  You can check us out on Facebook and Twitter (@CapsNewsNetwork) for immediate updates as well.

Until then, enjoy the snow.  What else are you supposed to do about it?

Pre-season was announced yesterday and you can find here.

The Washington Capitals announced their 2009-10 regular season schedule today and open on the road in Boston on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The Capitals will make their Verizon Center debut on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second game of the season.

The 2009-10 schedule includes a two-week break for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, which will feature NHL players. The Capitals will be off for 17 days from Feb. 14-March 2.

The 2009-10 NHL schedule format, similar to last season’s, has the Capitals facing the other teams in the Southeast Division six times each and the remaining Eastern Conference opponents four times each. Washington plays each team in the Western Conference at least once, with two games each against Columbus, Detroit and San Jose. Nine Western Conference teams will visit Verizon Center.

More than half of the Capitals' 41 home games at Verizon Center fall on weekends, including nine Friday games, six Saturday games and six Sunday games. The schedule features holiday home games on the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 25 vs. Buffalo), the day after Christmas (Dec. 26 vs. New Jersey) and Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 7 vs. Pittsburgh).

All but six of Washington's home games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m., with the exceptions all falling on Sunday afternoons.
